After Your Root Canal: What to Expect in the First 48 Hours

2 June 2026 · 6 min read

Glass of water and small amber medicine bottle on a soft cream marble bedside table.

Mild soreness, a numb lip, a temporary filling, here is exactly what to expect after your root canal, what is normal, and when to actually call the clinic.

Most anxiety around root canal treatment happens before the procedure. Afterwards, mild tenderness, a bruised feeling on biting and some jaw stiffness are normal for a few days.

Do not chew on the treated tooth until the permanent restoration is complete. A back tooth usually needs a crown or onlay after root canal treatment to prevent fracture.

Call the clinic if swelling appears, pain becomes severe, the temporary filling comes out, fever develops, or a painful bump appears on the gum.
